Shining a light on domestic and family violence

Integrating Art and Nature to Heal and Empower

A serene space designed to raise awareness about domestic violence and provide a place for healing and reflection. This inclusive environment is particularly dedicated to survivors of family and domestic violence, offering a safe and empowering space for contemplation and dialogue.

With State Government, City of Adelaide and community support, Spirit of Woman are creating South Australia’s first public tribute to victims and survivors of domestic and family violence (DFV) – The Place of Courage.

This revolutionary and inclusive space ( to be established in the Tulya Wardli/Bonython Park and Council Areas across SA ) will be a powerful public reminder and acknowledgement of the horrific damage caused by DFV in our communities.

The Place of Courage will be a space for:

  • Everyone All community members, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, LGBTQI, and all culturally and linguistically diverse migrant and refugee communities who want to mourn, find solace, heal, or share their stories.

  • Education Multicultural community and school education programs, community gatherings and school field trips designed to educate about the impact of DFV and what can be done to reduce it in our communities.

  • Prevention programs – In partnership with local service providers, not-for-profit organisations, Indigenous and multicultural organisations, schools, and the general public, to develop strategies to reduce DFV in our communities.

  • Community gatherings Vigils, community events, protests and marches to acknowledge, own and reflect on the tragedy of DFV and to change the discourse to stop the blame and shame.

  • Future generations To heal, to end the intergenerational cycle, and to pledge not to perpetuate it in the future.

Sculptural Focal Points:

  • A larger-than-life bronze figure, embodying quiet strength.

  • Accompanied by a bronze canid, symbolizing companionship, loyalty, protection, and comfort.

  • Inspired by “Women Who Run With The Wolves” by Clarissa Pinkola Estés.

Curved Design Elements:

  • Unique seating arrangements and pathways creating ‘healing circles’ and ‘circles of safety.’

  • Empowering words and reflective language inscribed on pathways and seating for meditation.

Integrated Landscaping:

  • Earth mounds mirroring the existing landscape of Bonython Park.

  • Gradually rising and falling mounds connecting the earth with the sky.

The central sculpture and its canid companion, both about one-third larger than average, are encircled by imperfect bronze water rings, 2.5 meters in diameter. Granite boulders add texture and invite interaction, providing seating and a link to the surrounding landscape.

Artist Clancy Warner & Team

The sculptural artworks and integrated landscape of the complete concept design for the Place of Courage at Bonython Park Tulya Wardli work together to create a place of healing and quiet refection that will raise awareness of domestic violence and encourage dialogue for understanding and change.

How is the Place of Courage going to change the story?

The Place of Courage will:

  • Be a physical, visual, and public display, acknowledging the existence of DFV in our community, shifting it from a private experience to a public issue

  • Provide people with an opportunity to connect, heal and grieve, empowering them with the courage to stand up and speak out

  • Raise public awareness and educate our community.
